I've just arrived at my hotel in Ft. Lauderdale for the 2009 National Wrestling Coaches Association Convention, and already have seen some big names and faces in the lobby. Unfortunately, I left my camera at home, so I will not be able to provide any pictures of me hanging out with the some of the very best. You'll just have to take my word on it!
I will provide updates throughout the weekend should there be any worthy events or news to post. I'm under strict orders from Coach Franke to attend every lecture and clinic and learn something, so I will do my best to accomplish that.
Stay tuned for updates...
UPDATED: SATURDAY, JUNE 8, 8:30 AM.
The big theme of yesterday's meetings was how to save college wrestling programs from being eliminated across all levels. Dan Gable summed it up nicely at lunch saying it was up to you, meaning coaches and wrestlers at all levels to be great ambassadors for the sport, and help increase the visibility and value of your program to your High School, your University, and your community. I think this is a great point, and is something I've been working very hard to do here in Lexington. I've got some great ideas that I look forward to implementing over the next few years, and as we continue to grow and improve, these things will take off.
The other big discussion, and by far the hottest topic, was should we change our season to a one semester sport. I don't want to speak too much about this as it was sort of a closed door meeting, but there are some definite pros and some very serious concerns about it, and there are about equal numbers on both sides of the issue. This will undoubtedly be discussed at great length over the next year or longer.
The weather is beautiful here in Ft. Lauderdale, and I'm hoping to actually get to the beach today, considering it is literally across the street from my hotel. They charge quite a bit for the internet here, so I most likely will not get in another post before leaving tomorrow, but you will hear from me again on Monday.
