Alumni Interview with Peter Lawrence, '08

Part 2 of my Alumni interviews comes from another Class of 2008 member, Peter Lawrence. During the 2007-2008 season, Lawrence broke the single season and career takedown records on his way to a 3rd place finish at Conference, and garnered Academic All American status.

Peter Lawrence
2008 Graduate
Double Major: Math and Economics
3.4 GPA
Hometown: Greenwich, CT
High School: Loomis Chafee

Wrestling Awards at W&L: Academic All American, Single season and Career leader in Takedowns, Winner of the Carlton Peebles Memorial Award, 3rd Place 2008 Centennial Conference.

Coach Bennett: What is Peter Lawrence up to these days?

PL: I have stayed busy since leaving W&L, and am looking forward to entering Columbia Business School this Fall. I just finished working on an iPhone application, and am currently in St. Petersburg, Russia via Krakow, Prague and Budapest on a global business tour Columbia sponsors for incoming MBA students.

CB: You were a pretty talented student-athlete coming out of high school, and had plenty of options about where to attend college. Why W&L?

PL: I was torn between going to a Division 1 program and a Division 3 program and at the end of the day I could not have made a better choice. I found an environment that empowered me to succeed on the wrestling mat while double majoring in Math and Economics, running the Williams Investment Society and having more fun than my friends at lesser schools. It was a uniquely exceptional hollistic educational and developmental experience that I will never forget.

{Coach's note: The Williams Investment Society is a student run organization that manages a portion of W&L's endowment and is responsible for making or losing some serious $$$ for the University, and while it is very difficult to be a member, the wrestling team has quite a few}

CB: I often speak to people about the feeling one gets once they become a part of W&L, and how it's such a special place. What do you think?
PL: I completely agree. As soon as I stepped on the W & L campus it became an inevitability that my brother and sister would follow me there {Coach's note: they did}.
CB: Tell me a little bit about your wrestling experience at W&L?

PL: Wrestling for W & L was a challenging and rewarding experience. I pushed myself to new limits, learned a lot about myself and grew as a person. I made some of the best friends you can have and had a career I am proud of.

CB: Any final thoughts on the University or the wrestling program?

PL: Coach Bennett and Coach Franke are passionate about their athletes. They understand the challenges of being a student-athlete and create an environment where you can succeed.

Keep checking the blog for more alumni interviews and other great information, it's going to be an exciting year!
