This past weekend, temperatures rose into the mid 60s, and I must say that it didn't take long for the campus community to notice! Shorts, flip-flops, skirts, and t-shirts were back in full force around town, and I was no exception!
I am trying to get out more on the weekends and truly experience all that Lexington and Rockbridge county has to offer, so I kicked off the Spring temps by going on a hike up House Mountain. Ultimately, this was a little too ambitious. Yes, the weather was nice, but at 3,800 feet, it was still all snow, as it was at the 3,000 foot mark, where Mrs. Bennett and I turned around. We were dressed for maybe 2,500 ft. temps and conditions, and once the path turned into all snow and shade, we quickly realized that we were not going to
enjoy anymore of that hike. The dogs were very disappointed. I did get a couple of good pics though.

If you're into hiking, mountain biking (which I teach in the spring), canoeing, kyaking, tubing, cycling, and/or cross country running, there is really no better place to live (and go to college). While I was at conference at Stevens Institute in Hoboken, NJ, someone asked me how living in the middle of nowhere was, to which I replied "it's perfect!" I just can't imagine going to school and/or living in the middle of the concrete jungle that many of our conference schools are in. At W&L, you deal with no traffic, no crime, no noise, and usually no snow! Plus the area is so nice and pleasant to look at, the people here are way more relaxed and prone to enjoying life. There just isn't the same grind feel that I get when I'm in big cities seeing everyone hustling about (and I worked in that environment for a year).
Temps are supposed to be in the upper 50s to upper 60s from now on out,
which is typical for this time of year, and I have already busted out the cornhole boards, fired up the grill, and begun working on my yard. Tubing season is not too far away, and I am looking forward to getting back up House Mountain, and many other great hiking trails in the very near future.
There just aren't that many schools that offer things like this, and I'm confident in saying that there are none that have an atmosphere like we do, which is just another in a long line of things that make Washington and Lee so special.
