So I'm really hoping this turns out alright, it was shot in pretty high quality, but after editing and uploading here and there for two day, I think I may have lost some of the quality by saving it under the wrong kind of file. Hope you enjoy!
A summary of Saturday's events:
It was 65 degrees on Saturday, Nov. 7 (although it was a bit cooler at 10am), and spirits were high. The first competition was team pushups, and it didn't take long for the underdog on paper, the Blue team, to prove that they had a physically stronger team, cruising to an easy victory. Event two was a 3x100, 1x200 relay race, that took 4 laps. The idea was a typical 4x100 relay that kept on going until the original starter went all the way around the track. Each lap one person had to run a 200 in order to pass the baton. This one was very close, and the white eliminated themselves by dropping the baton twice. They only lost by about 10 meters, so a major error. The relay was worth 3 points, giving the early lead to the Blue Team.
Event 3 was team sit-ups, worth 1 point, and was a must-win for the whites. Perhaps the blues were a bit overconfident on this one with their lead, as they got absolutely crushed by the whites. Event 4 moved to the stadium steps. Beginning on the track, each team member had to sprint about 50 meters in opposite directions, and the next person couldn't leave until they hit the stairs. The blue team got off to a quick lead, but could not maintain their pace, as the lighter, quicker white team cruised to an easy victory, tying the competition at 4 points each.
Event 5 moved to Alumni field and the extra heavy duty tractor tires. This relay race consisted of one person on each team at a time sprinting to the tire, flipping it, and sprinting back. This pattern continued for about 50-60 yards until one team got through the goal posts. The blue team's power lineup gave them the slight edge, and while close, the white team just didn't have the juice to gain anything. Blue wins and captures 3 points to move ahead 7-4.
Event 6 took place on the soccer practice fields and was an agility course. It began with a 10 yard front crab-walk, followed by a 10 yard army crawl. After that they had to shuffle and sprawl around a series of 5 cones (the managers got to run this first section) before bear crawling up and down a very steep hillWe finished it off with a sprint back up and down the same hill and into a dizzy bat spin. 10 times around a bat before sprinting to the finish. This led to some great falls and funny runs, and it was the white team's ability to master the dizzy bat that lead to a crushing victory. Agility course was worth 2 points and made the score 7-6, Blue.
Moving indoors for the final 4 events, the white team slaughtered the blues in dodgeball in event 7, and unfortunately we didn't get any good video of this. 8-7 white. The white team continued their domination by trouncing the blues in what was probably the worst game of basketball ever played. Ever. Picking up another 2 points, white had a commanding 10-7 lead, with only 2 events and 3 points remaining.
While the blue team struggled in the gym, the water was their home. Event 8, the raft race, and a must win for blue, led to a cruising victory that was won through good transitions and straight paddling. Blue 9, white 10. Last event, worth one point. The big splash competition was a cakewalk for the larger bodied blue team, aided by a clear understanding of the rules. While the white team went mostly for style points, the blue team had much bigger splashes, and swept the event, which was a match play format.
Much to my excitement, and the reason why I made the thing worth 20 points, the teams tied and moved into overtime. The ancient art of Belly Flopping. Set up again in match play, every member had to attempt a belly flop. 4 of the twelve were absolutely epic, and there were some red bellies. When the dust settled, the white team emerged victorious on their very last flop. Pain was definitely glory in this case.
The white team wins 3-2 in overtime and takes the Donkey Trophy (along with a reward yet to be named). It was a tough and fun day, and it was a great way to end the pre-season, as we open up at Ursinus this weekend.
