Training camp has ended, and I can say at the very least that I am in much better shape. I will assume that the rest of the guys are as well.
6 weeks into school already, and we are currently off today and tomorrow for what is called "reading" days (you may know it as Fall Break). I hope that our guys do actually get in some reading, as I know I didn't when I was a student, and was always behind during midterms, which begin next week for a lot of people. That's the great thing about hindsight, I've made all the mistakes already, so who better to advise the team on what to do, what not to do, and what to expect. We also have quite a good support system in place with our coaching staff, alumni, and our current Student Athlete Mentors, and it pays dividends throughout the course of our wrestler's careers at W&L.
Many of the things that are in place now were not in place when I was a student-athlete, and I can tell you from experience that these things would have definitely helped me. Because of that, I strive to not only use the resources that are available to the team, but to also be a resource for each and every young person that may need it. I believe that the insight a coach can have as a former W&L student-athlete will no doubt have a greater impact on the way we train, the way we study, and the way we prepare ourselves for the short-term, mid-term, and long-term future.
Practice in the room begins in full swing on Sunday, and we wrestle 3 weeks from Saturday at the W&L Fall Classic, Nov. 7. Thanks for reading!
