LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team fell to 4-6 overall with a heartbreaking 22-21 loss to the Apprentice School on Wednesday evening at Doremus Gym.
The Generals trailed 16-12 heading into the final four matches, but won the first three to assume a 21-16 lead heading into the final bout. In the last match, W&L junior 184-pounder Richard Knack (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) was pinned by NNA sophomore Daniel Hare (Smithfield, Va./Smithfield) with just 46 seconds left in the match as the Builders (10-8) slipped away with the victory.
First-year David Dennis (Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood) began the Generals' rally from 16-12 down with a 1-0 decision over junior Matt Perry (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith) at 157 pounds. Senior Rob Terrin (Baltimore, Md./Friends) gave the Generals an 18-16 lead with a 7-4 win over junior Will Harcum (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) at 165 pounds, avenging 2 previous losses to Harcum, and junior Jon Brown (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) notched an 11-6 decision over first-year Charles Mills (Republic, Wash./Republic) for W&L's 21-16 lead.
Senior 285-pounder John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) was also victorious for W&L, knocking off NNA senior Cecil Lee (Portsmouth, Va./Churchland), 6-5. The win avenged 3 earlier losses to Lee this season. Christopher improved to 15-5 on the year, while Lee fell to 33-7.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it competes in a quad at McDaniel College beginning at 11:00 am. The Generals will take on McDaniel, Muhlenberg and Ursinus in the final outing of the regular season.
